20 years ago today was a very bittersweet birthday for me. I had this big piece appear on The New York Times Op-Ed page. But the reason it appeared was that the Supreme Court had just declared Bush/Cheney the “winners” of the 2000 election, ushering in a terrible era for this country. I had pitched this concept before the outcome was known: either Al Gore or GWB would be given a dual-portrait, one side basking in victory, the other grappling with a divided nation. So thanks to that 5-4 ruling, GWB it was. To add insult to injury, the editors made me remove the beads of sweat I’d drawn on Bush’s forehead, fearing it would look too critical of the new president-elect.

Today I am celebrating that, in contrast to 2000, our country is ENDING a terrible era, as Electors cast their votes and Joe Biden will officially become president-elect. Obviously, there’s so much work to be done to heal the country, right the wrongs, and bring people together. But we’re headed in the right direction!
