Rare surviving late-Victorian
Rare surviving late-Victorian era weatherboard and corrugated iron single-fronted cottage in the “gunbarrel” style. Lilyfield.
Likely a former
Likely a former late Victorian era corner tavern. Current apartments look like they’re under renovation, with the balcony supports missing out front. Balmain.
Margaret Telfer Building.
Margaret Telfer Building. Post WWII administrative offices, the University of Sydney. Named after the first woman to be appointed University Registrar (1955), the top administrative post at any Australian university. Glebe.
Decrepit former light
Decrepit former light industrial hardware supplies store, dating from the early years of the 20th century. Now appears to be used for storage. Annandale.
Wall garden. Entirely
Wall garden. Entirely self-seeded vegetation on this perpetually damp part of a sheer wall of Sydney Sandstone, quarried out to about 30 ft down above an older road cutting, carting away solid sandstone - the 19th century building material of choice. The resulting narrow ribbon park around the rock face was named the Sarah Peninton Reserve in 1951. Peninton was one of the leading sympathisers and chief provocateurs in the local timber and dock workers strike of 1929. Solidarity forever. Glebe.
Lady Hampshire Hotel
Lady Hampshire Hotel (1911). One of the smallest front bars in Sydney. Blink and you’d miss it, and go thirsty. Strangely enough, it has a beer garden out the back. The pub is currently closed for refurbishment. Camperdown.
Unusual art deco
Unusual art deco facade on this inter-war period house, complete with contemporaneous garage, most likely 1930’s vintage. Hurlstone Park.
