Inter-war period warehouse (1922). Originally a wool store, it’s had many uses over the years, including as an ammo dump as part of the 2nd Central Ordnance Depot during WWII. Boasts a Heritage Listed solid timber goods lift, that remains in use. Marrickville.

June 1. First day of winter. Late Victorian-Edwardian era chimney pots. In the not too distant past (say, even 30 years ago), on cold still nights, the Inner West would be swathed in coal smoke. Dystopian with an early morning sea fog as well. Spooky shit. There’s never been any shortage of cheap coking coal in Sydney with coal mines and coke ovens to the north and south, and folks used plenty of it in their fireplaces. While most, if not all, of these c.1880-1910 chimneys are now dormant, even today in some parts of the Inner West in the right conditions you can still detect the unmistakable aroma of “coke smoke” in the wintertime. Those days have been a long time in going away. Annandale, Glebe, Hurlstone Park, Leichhardt, Lewisham, Marrickville.

Last day of autumn. Rare remnant. Surviving row of very old terrace houses, most likely dating to the 1870’s. Would have been nice and toasty in winter, with those four pot chimney’s running a coal-fired fire place on either side in each house. Chippendale.

Gone a bit

Gone a bit over the top on the green hedging here. Mind you, it’s a meticulously maintained thick mat, so the house would be nice and cool in summer and it’d help keep the joint warm in winter. Lilyfield.

Nope. No idea what’s going on with this odd wall between “Edgar House” and another late Victorian era villa. Lewisham.

Orange Lotus. A few houses have been built in, around, behind and on top of this remnant Sydney Sandstone facade, likely quarried locally, dating back to the 1870’s-early 1880’s. Balmain.

Gladstone Store (1886). Originally George Luke’s Grocery, remaining a corner shop for more than a century, now a café. The original Sydney Sandstone facade now largely obscured by the wildly out of place enclosed balcony. Birchgrove.

Madsen Building (1944), the University of Sydney. Originally the National Standards Laboratory. Later became the Commonwealth Science Industry and Research Organisation, now houses the University’s School of Geosciences. Built in stages over five years to a late art deco design during WWII. It’s where Wi-Fi was invented in 1992. Named after Sir John Madsen, founding Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1920. Camperdown.

Great Depression era art deco apartment building, with a “Sydney Red Brick” facade. The enormous red clay pits over at St Peters at the southern end of Newtown had been pretty much worked out by the end of the 1930’s. They were then progressively filled in, and after WWII turned into the biggest parkland in the Inner West. Petersham.
