It’s somewhat less costly to challenge efforts to privatize public education that divert tax dollars to religious schools and profit-adjacent charters. But the approach is not dissimilar. “Little Devils Academy,” anyone? The setting is the Iowa General Assembly. Iowa Starting Line: Iowans got a chance to comment on Gov. Kim Reynolds’ latest bill to fund private school tuition with public tax dollars during a Tuesday public hearing held by the Iowa House Education Reform Committee. House Republicans have fast-tracked the proposal so it skips several steps that bills normally go to before they reach the House floor for debate, including financial vetting through the Appropriations and Ways and Means committees. According to estimates Reynolds’ staff provided to other media outlets, the plan would cost $341 million annually once it is fully phased in.

Rachel Fraser, currently associate professor of philosophy at Oxford University, has accepted an offer from the Dianoia Institute of Philosophy at Australian Catholic University. Dr. Fraser works in epistemology, feminist philosophy, and philosophy of language. You can learn more about her research here. At the Dianoia Institute, she will be associate professor of philosophy. Additionally, the Dianoia Institute has hired Tushar Menon, currently a postdoctoral fellow at Cambridge, as a research fellow (equivalent to an assistant professor position). Now that the season of good cheer is behind us, I feel I can bring up a serious and painful issue that unfortunately became a reality for me this year during Christmas. I received whiskey stones.

We’re going to take a look here at the primary cycle (July 1 – December 30). This is when most job posting happens. Here’s a look at postings across all job types: Remember 2020? Oof da that was a rough year. Anyway, we’re trending a bit higher than usual on junior posts relative to previous years. In fact, the trend for junior posts over the last seven years has been more jobs. Open rank, postdoc, and senior posts are down slightly but still within a normalish range historically. Visiting fellowships are up slightly, but still within a normal range.
