I wonder why? While all the other candidates were in Iowa running around in motorcycle gear and ppressing the flesh, Trump was at his gold club doing … this.

An example from last night’s Nikki Haley town hall on CNN: TAPPER: So it’s — I mean, do you have an opinion, though? I mean, would a — if a six-week ban theoretically came to your desk, would you sign it? HALEY: But why — why — I will answer that when you answer — when you ask Kamala and Biden if they would agree to 37 weeks, 38 weeks, 39 weeks. Then I’ll answer your question. (APPLAUSE) No one asked them that. No one asked them how late they’re willing to go. What I’m saying is why go and put the American people through that? Why do that? Why not talk about what’s the truth? And the truth is where can we get 60 votes? I just gave you the consensus about where I think we can come together. TAPPER: I think Biden and Harris have been pretty clear that they don’t support any restrictions. I mean, that’s — that’s their… HALEY: They said abortion up until the time of birth, right? TAPPER: I don’t think that’s the language they used, but, yes, I mean, they — theoretically, they don’t support restrictions. They say it should be up to a woman, her doctor and her God.
Republicans are begging migrants not to leave the state: Florida Republicans on Monday met with migrants to urge them not to leave the state in the wake of a new anti-immigration law that is sparking boycotts of the state. An NPR analysis determined that the law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) “limits social services for undocumented immigrants, allocates millions more tax dollars to expand DeSantis’ migrant relocation program, invalidates driver’s licenses issued to undocumented people by other states, and requires hospitals that get Medicaid dollars to ask for a patient’s immigration status.” On Monday, state Reps. Alina Garcia (R) and Rick Roth (R) spoke at an event advising migrants of the impacts of SB1718. Joy Reid wrote about what’s happening a couple of weeks ago: Last week, Desantis signed a vile and inhumane immigration bill imposing penalties and restrictions on undocumented immigrants in Florida that, among other things, bans local governments from issuing identification cards for people who can’t prove citizenship.
Most of the country thinks the economy is in the ditch. It isn’t. Americans are not happy with the economy. Which is weird, given that it is doing just fine. It’s hard to see what could turn sentiment around. That’s largely because of Fed chair Jerome Powell, who doesn’t want and won’t allow some kind of economic boom — he thinks the economy is running too hot already. The U.S. economy continues to defy the odds. The May employment report, released on Friday morning, marked the 14th straight month that more jobs were created than economists expected. It’s all a far cry from the misery in other countries like the U.K. — with sky-high inflation — or Germany, which is now officially in a recession. By the numbers: The U.S. economy has created more than 4 million new jobs in the past 12 months. GDP continues to grow, and is up more than 5% from its pre-pandemic peak, even after accounting for inflation. The average U.S. employee now makes $33.44 per hour, a raise of more than 17.5% since pre-pandemic. The stock market is up 10% so far this year, and we’re not even halfway done.
Lol: Right. Sure. That happened.
From twitter: In one of the most notable moments in sports history, Kenyan runner Abel Mutai was just a few feet from the finish line, but became confused with the signage and stopped thinking he had completed the race. A Spanish athlete, Ivan Fernandez, was right behind him, and after realizing what was happening, he started shouting at the Kenyan for him to continue running; but Mutai didn’t understand his Spanish. Fernandez eventually caught up to him and instead of passing him, he pushed him to victory. A journalist asked Ivan, “Why did you do that?” Ivan replied, “My dream is that someday we can have a kind of community life where we push and help each other to win.” The journalist insisted “But why did you let the Kenyan win?” Ivan replied, “I didn’t let him win, he was going to win.” The journalist insisted again, “But you could have won!” Ivan looked at him & replied, “But what would be the merit of my victory? What would be the honor of that medal? What would my Mom think of that?” Values are transmitted from generation to generation. What values are we teaching our children?
Mainstream economists are professional trolls. By this, I don’t mean that mainstream economists work in troll farms and are being paid by Putin—though it would be better for humanity if they were: they’d do far less damage. I mean that, almost to a person, they behave as trolls when debating critics of economics, and when … Continue reading "Troll Wars in Economics"

Generalissimo DeSantis opens a new front All the GOP presidential candidates (except for Donald Trump who apparently had some urgent hysterical posting and golfing to do) converged on Iowa last weekend for Sen. Joanie Ernst’s Roast and Ride gathering. They gave speeches in front of haystacks and wandered around in dad jeans pressing the white Republican flesh. Florida first lady Casey DeSantis sported a black leather jacket with the words “Where Woke Goes to Die” emblazoned on the back and Mike Pence donned a leather vest and rode around on a Harley trying desperately to imitate a regular guy. It was a magical time. There were a lot of speeches but one stood out among all the rest: “… we will fight the woke in education, we will fight the woke in corporations, we will fight the woke in the halls of congress, we will never ever surrender to the woke mob! “ As you can see, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is fashioning himself as a wartime leader, aping Winston Churchill’s most famous speech given June 4, 1940 after the miraculous rescue of tens of thousands of British troops at Dunkirk.
She is something else. Her speeches are as inauthentic as his are — her motor-mouthed delivery of anecdotes about their little kids using permanent markers on the walls of the Governor’s mansion ring hollow especially since she delivers them in a Kari Lake-esque voice as if she’s reading from a newscast teleprompter. (She used to be a broadcaster and it isn’t helping her.) She’s pushing DeSantis’ “heroic” fighter image and it just isn’t sticking. And she keeps wearing costumes which are as inauthentic as her speeches. This piece in the Daily Beast by Katie Baker is just brutal. But I think she’s right: The First Lady of Florida showed up on the campaign trail in Iowa this weekend wearing a ghastly black leather jacket—American flag on front, an alligator and the silhouette of her state on the back, with the sneering words, “Where Woke Goes to Die”—that brought to mind nothing so much as the racks of a Red State big-bin store where it would be retailing for $24.99.
