We’ve all heard the ‘rules-based order’ catchphrase a lot and Australia has historically been a great supporter, championing the major international institutions at the time of their establishment. In recent years, we have joined the refrain that this international order represents the agreed rules of the road, and there’s no reason to alter it. Sounds Continue reading »

How is the war going? Two expert observers add to the confusion. Former British soldier Richard Iron, reflects on what he sees as the brittleness of Putin’s situation, thinks Putin could fall in a coup and predicts that Ukraine has a good chance of turfing Russians out of Ukraine altogether. American Professor John Mearsheimer, a Continue reading »

We, Westerners, impose our sense of individualism onto a society that has a sense of communalism. We are bothered by it.  But this is not something the Chinese people need “rescuing from”. China is not your enemy, the people telling you China is your enemy, are you enemy. An open letter from Jerry Grey to Continue reading »

An unbiased look at the progression within Israeli politics shows that there is a clear and direct line between the early Zionists like Golda Meir and Shimon Peres and today’s Zionists Ben-Gvir and his vile constituency of racists.

I’m going to say something you wouldn’t expect from the CEO of a car company: America’s roads are a warzone. Over 40,000 traffic fatalities in 2021. Millions of car accidents per year. Our streets and highways are dangerous, and it’s clear that the current system isn’t working. Years of preventable tragedies inspired me to start this company, and I’m proud to say that our self-driving cars will someday save countless lives. But, and I want to be upfront about this, they will kill some of you first.

We all think we’re above-average drivers, but let’s face it: humans make mistakes. We get tired. We get angry. We drink. Combine any of those with an automobile, and you’ve got a recipe for tragedy. Our autonomous vehicles don’t make human mistakes. Instead, they make errors that only a machine could make, like confusing a cyclist for an open roadway, or mixing up a pedestrian for an open roadway, or making a small oopsie and thinking that playing children are an open roadway. Nobody’s perfect.

New CNN poll: Former President Donald Trump continues to hold what has proven to be an unshakeable position atop the Republican field of candidates vying to take on President Joe Biden next year, according to a new CNN poll conducted by SSRS. Trump is the top choice for his party’s nomination at the traditional Labor Day start to a more engaged campaign season, ahead of his nearest rival by more than 30 percentage points (52% of Republicans and Republican-leaning independent voters support him, compared with 18% behind Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis). And Trump is broadly seen as best able to handle a wide range of issues. More than 4 in 10 in the potential GOP primary electorate say they have definitely decided to support him for the nomination (43% are definite Trump backers, 20% are firmly behind another candidate, and 37% have no first choice or say they could change their minds). Nearly two-thirds consider him one of their top two choices, and 61% say they think he is extremely or very likely to become the party’s nominee, up from 52% at the start of the summer.

US Chip Sanctions On China Appear To Be Failing Hard

Huawei, the first company to be slapped with sanctions, has announced a phone with 5G capability with domestic 7nm chips.

Huawei Technologies and China’s top chipmaker SMIC have built an advanced 7-nanometer processor to power its latest smartphone, according to a teardown report by analysis firm TechInsights.

Tennessee Three member takes on Marsha Blackburn Breaking: Tennessee State Rep. Gloria Johnson (D-Knoxville) has announced a run to unseat Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn in 2024. Johnson’s campaign launched Tuesday with a multicity tour around the Volunteer State. The state representative is traveling around Tennessee on Tuesday, making a stop in Knoxville at Savage Gardens. She will be joined by Representative Justin Jones in Nashville, campaign Co-Chair Representative Justin J. Pearson in Memphis, and campaign Co-Chair Senator Charlane Oliver in all three cities. “Gloria has dedicated her life to fighting for justice and standing tall for Tennesseans who have been left out, left behind, or left without a voice,” a press release announcing her campaign launch states. “She is challenging Marsha Blackburn because Tennessee deserves a Senator who will fight for working families not special interest donors and D.C. politicians.” Best wishes, Gloria! It will be an uphill fight worth having. Update: Website here. Was pressed for time earlier.

Who are you? (biography/background)

Since 2012 I have worked in technical roles including Front-End Developer, Tech Lead, and Dev Manager. I fell into Drupal because the possibilities felt endless, the community so capable and inspired. There was always more to learn and even early on, opportunities to give back. 2022 brought a career change for me and I am now a Scrum Master who focuses heavily on Continuous Process Improvement. The title may be different but ultimately, it's just the next step in a long journey through the world of Drupal.

When I am not working or volunteering, I love dismantling electronics and tinkering with Arduinos. One of my more interesting projects involved a mind-controlled RGB LED using tech from a children’s toy. My hope is to continue establishing myself in the community, but to also make time to work on personal projects like this on a more regular basis.

Why are you running for a board seat at the Drupal Association? (mission/motivation)

Been working with Drupal for almost 10 years now but just got involved in the last year with the community and have loved it!  Started in bugsmash, helped start needs-review-queue-initative and would like to see how I can continue to give back!

Why should members vote for you? (qualifications)

  • Been heavily involved over the last year
  • Active on slack and trying to answer community threads
  • Tapping into community frustrations and helping resolve those.  Think this would be an opportunity to only continue that fantastic work forward!
  • Possibly help to start new initiatives to help push Drupal even further.

Who are you? (biography/background)

I have worked with Drupal since 2012, today I work for Acquia as a Technical Account Manager and focus my community efforts in the Houston Drupal User Groups. I have been part of the team organizing DrupalCon Latin America in 2015, a DrupalCamp Colombia in Medellin in 2020, which was stopped due to the CoVid pandemic, and some other events. I have recently rejoined Drupal Colombia to start planning new events in the future and also working with Drupaleros, a Spain lead initiative that is looking to promote Drupal and bring new people to the project and community. I have previously participated in the board elections, and wish to participate again to promote new ideas.

Daddy Boy follows Emerson as he packs into a van full of strangers and drives up and down the country—staying in Days Inns, eating bags of carrots from Walmart, and wanting nothing more than to surrender to the force of a colossal storm. “We had no idea where we were going,” Emerson writes, “just waiting for one cloud to pop.” Roaming the prairie landscape of his childhood, Emerson recalls his adoptive dad, Hank‚ unflinching and extremely Texan, and his biological dad, who was rarely around. From the van’s trash-strewn back seat, and in the face of these looming figures, Emerson begins to wonder: Did he want to be Daddy now?
